Dazzling virtuosity, French elegance, irresistible youthful passion and drive, and a chance to hear music by some of today’s most sought-after composers. Our conductor Olari Elts begins the season with a fascinating stylistic menu. Success in the Tchaikovsky Competition shot the career of tonight’s soloist, young Finnish-Dutch cellist Jonathan Roozeman, into orbit. The Cello Concerto No. 1 by Camille Saint-Saëns requires a soloist of astounding agility and a supple command of melody. Woven into Magnus Lindberg’s Souvenir and Thierry Escaich’s Erinnerung are flashbacks of music by composers who mean a lot to them. Saint-Saëns’s fresh, romantic Symphony No. 2 rounds off the evening.
