An exciting concert that destroys any preconceived ideas about the recorder as, in the hands of a true wizard, it becomes a futuristic virtuoso instrument. Coupled with the breath-taking Appo, Concerto for Recorder and Orchestra composed last year for Eero Saunamäki by Jukka Tiensuu, who turned 70 this August, is a brand new work by Kotka-born Jouni Hirvelä composed as a commission from the Kymi Sinfonietta. The other virtuoso tonight is cellist-turned-conductor Tomas Djupsjöbacka, who begins the programme with Beethoven’s majestic Coriolanus Overture but ends the concert in lyrical mood with the tender Siegfried Idyll composed by Wagner for his wife and their new-born baby.
