This concert strikes to the very heart of the Classical era. As a taster of early Classicism, the menu offers some music from the first masterly opera of the emerging genre, Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice, and his delightful small-scale Symphony in A. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 is regarded as one of the best Classical works for the instrument and is more than familiar to auditioning cellists. The soloist is Oliver Erlich, sometimes spotted in the ranks of the Kymi Sinfonietta. Boccherini, a first-rate cellist in his day, plays with the Don Juan theme in his fourth symphony.
