Tonight’s conductor, Juha Kangas – “father” of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra – has reaped many accolades and distinctions in the course of an extensive and varied career both at home in Finland and abroad. With him he is bringing two works by Mozart and two by Latvian Pēteris Vasks, a composer with whom he has long been collaborating. It was to Kangas that Vasks dedicated his Musica Serena. The soloist in Vasks’s second Cello Concerto is Finnish virtuoso Marko Ylönen, who has also recorded the concerto with Kangas. Its portrayal of human life well reflects Kangas’s profound understanding of Vasks’s music.
