Opera is Italy’s gift to the world, and to guide us on our journey to its very sources is one of our two new Artistic Partners, Topi Lehtipuu. The sparkling classics range in this concert from the early 17th-century Baroque to the 19th century in the company of masters of this impressive dramatic genre. At the heart of the programme is the overture to Monteverdi’s Orfeo, which has gone down in history as the first great opera.
Following it are some arias by the late-Baroque master Vivaldi and two 19th-century operatic ‘giants’, Donizetti and Rossini. Bringing us up to the present day is Thierry Escaich’s Baroque Song inspired by the chorale preludes of J.S. Bach. The star soloist is mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg.
