SUMMARY:PEARLS OF THE BALTIC SEA
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Nathanaël Iselin\nSoloist: Annaleena Jämsä\, flute \nEduard Tubin: Estonian Dance Suite: III. Setu tants\nHeino Eller: Waltz-Fantasy in B minor\nJean Sibelius: Scene with Cranes\, Op. 44 No. 2\nCarl Nielsen: Flute Concerto\nAndrea Tarrodi: Birds of Paradise II\nFelix Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 11 \nNathanaël Iselin begins his season as artistic partner of the orchestra in magnificent style with a programme celebrating Baltic Sea Day on 27 August. Curated by Iselin himself\, this vibrant concert brings the rich musical heritage of the Baltic Sea region to life through dance rhythms\, bird-inspired imagery and the mystique of northern nature. A connecting theme of life by the Baltic Sea runs through the programme\, while Mendelssohn’s youthful First Symphony adds an extra burst of energy to the evening. Danish composer Carl Nielsen wrote his Flute Concerto a century ago\, and audiences in the Kymenlaakso region now have a rare opportunity to hear this lyrical and richly coloured work performed live. The soloist is the versatile and charismatic Annaleena Jämsä.

SUMMARY:AMONG THE LIVING – AN EVENING WITH MIKKO KUUSTONEN
DESCRIPTION:Jukka Perko\, saxophone & artistic lead\nMikko Kuustonen\, vocals\nVarre Vartiainen\, guitar \nContinuing in his role as Kymi Sinfonietta’s artistic partner\, Jukka Perko joins forces with his friend\, singer-songwriter Mikko Kuustonen\, to bring Kuustonen’s remarkable body of work to our audiences. At the same time\, Kuustonen fulfils a long-held dream of performing as a soloist with a larger orchestral ensemble. This unique evening will feature both familiar songs and new material. The longtime friends aim to create a spontaneous and unforgettable shared experience. The collaboration is also a tribute to Kuustonen’s diverse artistic journey as well as a bold step towards something new. “Fifty years have passed since I wrote my first song\, and I still experience the creation of every song as a miracle. When writing\, I am alone\, but on stage I become part of a magnificent collective and a flow that brings the songs to life.”

SUMMARY:KYMI SINFONIETTA STRINGS – THREE STORIES FOR STRINGS
DESCRIPTION:Heinrich Biber: Battalia à 10\nDmitri Shostakovich: Chamber Symphony in C minor\, Op. 110a (orch. Barshai)\nOsvaldo Golijov: Last Round \nMusic for strings that pulses with energy and resonates with an anti-war message. Composed in the 17th century\, Biber’s Battalia à 10 surprises with its unusual instrumental techniques and strikingly inventive take on Baroque music. Shostakovich’s intense chamber symphony dives deep into the composer’s inner world of light and shadow. Golijov’s Last Round pays tribute to Astor Piazzolla\, blending playful rhythms with elements of tango.

SUMMARY:KYMI SINFONIETTA WINDS – PLAN B: BARBER & BIZET
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Barber: Summer Music\, Op. 31\nGeorges Bizet: Suite from the opera Carmen (arranged for wind nonet by Andreas N. Tarkmann) \nIf an August summer day had a soundtrack\, this would be it. Barber’s Summer Music paints a landscape where time seems to stand still and the air shimmers with warmth. Bizet’s Carmen sets the atmosphere ablaze with operatic passion. Andreas N. Tarkmann’s witty arrangement for wind nonet offers a fresh perspective on a beloved classic. Sometimes Plan B turns out to be the best option!

SUMMARY:EMOTIONAL ENCOUNTERS concert series: “Conflicted” – The Unanswered Question
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: James Sherlock\nCharles Ives: The Unanswered Question\, S. 50
\nJean Françaix: Dixtuor\nFrank Bridge: Lament\, H.117\nEdgar Varèse: Octandre\nFrank Martin: Concerto for Seven Wind Instruments\, Timpani\, Percussion and Strings \nThe soloistic spotlight falls on chamber ensembles formed from the orchestra’s own ranks\, under the baton of a new conducting collaborator\, James Sherlock. This five-work series offers a fascinating look at different 20th-century compositional styles at a moment when composers were exploring the future directions of art music. Ives creates a philosophical dialogue between instrumental groups\, Françaix chooses humour as his stylistic tool\, Bridge voices his opposition to war through music\, Varèse focuses on playful rhythms\, and Martin brings together elements of past and present. Each composer inspires the listener in his own way and leads us into a world of intriguing musical colours.

SUMMARY:IN THE FLOW OF MELODY – CHAMBER CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:Kymi Sinfonietta string quartet: Sergei Tiutiunik\, violin – Linda Fogelsone\, violin – Margarethe Breit\, viola – Aleksandra Petrova\, cello\nDmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 4 in D major\, Op. 83\nMaurice Ravel: String Quartet in F major \nThe chamber concerts by our own musicians are created with great heart and artistic ambition\, highlighting the personal interests of our players. For this Thursday evening\, our string ensemble offers two magnificent string quartets\, both moving in deeply emotional waters while cherishing melodic beauty. Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 4 is a profoundly personal work that reflects the contradictions of its\nera and one of which the composer himself was very proud. Ravel’s String Quartet became his first major success\, and audiences also received it with enthusiasm – it is a masterful combination of impressionistic tones and elegant musical storytelling.

SUMMARY:SIBELIUS!
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Jukka Untamala
\nSoloist: Sueye Park\, violin\nLouise Farrenc: Overture No. 1 in E minor\, Op. 23\nJean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor\, Op. 47\nJean Sibelius: Symphony No. 3 in C major\, Op. 52 \nWe are delighted to welcome Sueye Park\, winner of the 2025 Sibelius Violin Competition\, whose impressively assured sound convinced the jury. The deeply moving power and beauty of Sibelius’s musical language reflecting Finnish nature and spirit is crystallised in the most recorded violin concerto of the 20th century.\nIt raises the soloist’s role to extraordinary heights of technical virtuosity and profound expression. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3\, radiating a clarity reminiscent of the Viennese classics\, and the expressive overture by Louise Farrenc – a driving force in 19th- century Parisian musical life – are interpreted under the direction of the versatile Jukka Untamala.
