SUMMARY:SAMULI EDELMANN & THE KYMI SINFONIETTA: VAIHEET
DESCRIPTION:Samuli Edelmann\, voice\nJukka Perko\, saxophone\nLeri Leskinen\, percussion & electronics\nMatti Paatelma\, piano\nKymi Sinfonietta\nIlkka Herkman\, mixing \nThe album Vaiheet released in 1997 by Samuli Edelmann featured settings by his father\, Toni Edelmann\, of poems by Goethe\, Hesse and Shakespeare and soon acquired cult status. The album was recorded in Paris as a large-scale production with a symphony orchestra. After Toni’s death\, Sami released more of his compositions on a second disc (Vaiheet 2\, 2019) with a smaller ensemble. Kymi Sinfonietta audiences were treated to a feast of these already highly-acclaimed pieces\, and the orchestra is now honoured to present the magnificent collection at the Helsinki Festival.

SUMMARY:THE SEASONS OF LOVE
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nRuut Kiiski \nSoloists:\nEssi Höglund\, violin\nLauri Sallinen\, clarinet \nOuti Tarkiainen:\nThe Seasons of Love (version for clarinet and string orchestra)\, Finnish premiere\, a\nKymi Sinfonietta commission \nW. A. Mozart:\nViolin Concerto No. 1 in B Flat\, KV 207 \nSamuel Ahonen:\nCastanets\, world premiere\, a Kymi Sinfonietta commission \nLouise Farrenc:\nSymphony No. 1 \nThe programme for this concert is an imaginative mixture of old and new. The new work by Samuli Ahonen was composed for the Kymi Sinfonietta and the winner of its category in the IV Uuno Klami Composition Competition for children and young people. Outi Tarkiainen’s The Seasons of Love is a paean to the power of love that changes with the different phases in life. Representing older music is the first violin concerto by Mozart\, with the magnificent Kotka-born Essi Höglund as the soloist. The delightful Symphony No. 1 by Louise Farrenc is enjoying a renaissance in orchestras’ repertoire\, and not without reason. The conductor is the versatile Ruut Kiiski\, now making her first appearance with the Kymi Sinfonietta.

SUMMARY:CHARISMA AND COMPASSION
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nTianyi Lu \nSoloist:\nAlexandra Dariescu\, piano \nElfrida Andrée:\nAndante quasi recitativo for strings \nClara Schumann:\nPiano Concerto in A Minor\, Op. 7 \nJohannes Brahms:\nSerenade No. 2 in A\, Op. 16 \nIt is a great pleasure for us to welcome the inspiring\, charismatic\, award-winning Alexandra Dariescu back to Kymenlaakso. Ten years have passed since she greatly impressed us at her debut with us\, and her visit this time is sure not to leave anyone cold. We also welcome Tianyi Lu\, winner of the Sir Georg Solti and Guido Cantelli conducting competitions\, who cherishes the ability to express communion and compassion in music. The programme also abounds in radiant energy: the virtuosic A-minor piano concerto by Clara Schumann\, the lyrical Andante quasi recitativo for strings by Elfrida Andrée with which the concert begins\, and the closing Serenade by Johannes Brahms.

SUMMARY:EASTER WEEK CONCERT THE RESURRECTION
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nTopi Lehtipuu \nSoloists:\nMagdalena Lucjan\, soprano\nSylwia Ziólkowska\, soprano\nDelphine Galou\, alto\nŽiga Čopi\, tenor\nNazar Mykulyak\, baritone \nContinuo / In collaboration with the Ensemble Nylandia \nGeorg Frideric Handel:\nLa Resurrezione \nThe message of Easter finds human and moving expression in the Resurrection oratorio by Handel. It was one of the finest works he composed during his Italian period\, and tonight is a rare opportunity to hear it. The Italian influence is reflected in the musical content\, and its beauty is manifest in a more personal and intimate way than in his other great oratorio\, Messiah. This version of the Resurrection story is especially interesting in that it presents some lesser-known characters\, and it also has some cheerful\, operatic touches. Here to perform it are some brilliant soloists hand-picked by our Artistic Partner Topi Lehtipuu.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL CLASSICS
DESCRIPTION:Leader:\nRaymond Cox \nSoloist:\nOliver Erlich\, cello \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nSymphony in A “Regensburg” \nJoseph Haydn:\nCello Concerto No. 2 in D\, Hob. VIIb2 \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nMusic from the opera Orpheus and Eurydice \nLuigi Boccherini:\nSymphony in D Minor G 506\, “La Casa del Diavolo” \nThis concert strikes to the very heart of the Classical era. As a taster of early Classicism\, the menu offers some music from the first masterly opera of the emerging genre\, Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice\, and his delightful small-scale Symphony in A. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 is regarded as one of the best Classical works for the instrument and is more than familiar to auditioning cellists. The soloist is Oliver Erlich\, sometimes spotted in the ranks of the Kymi Sinfonietta. Boccherini\, a first-rate cellist in his day\, plays with the Don Juan theme in his fourth symphony.

SUMMARY:IN THE NIGHT’S EMBRACE
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nAdrien Perruchon \nSoloist:\nMyungJoo Lee\, soprano \nArnold Schönberg:\nVerklärte Nacht\, Op. 4 \nThea Musgrave:\nNight Music \nHector Berlioz:\nLes Nuits d’été\, Op. 7 \nThe poetic themes of this concert evocative of the seductive call of the world at night act as signposts for the listener. Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that unfolds before us a picture of a man and a woman soul-searching by the light of the moon. A picturesque\, nocturnal mood also pervades the mysterious Night Music composed by Thea Musgrave in 1968. The song cycle Les Nuits d’été by the Romantic master Hector Berlioz focuses on a motif from six poems by Théophile Gautier about the course of love – the delights and their renunciation.
The programme has been masterminded by its conductor\, Adrien Perruchon\, and the soloist is the magnificent Korean soprano MyungJoo Lee.

SUMMARY:MOVING AND MASTERLY
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nKerem Hasan \nSoloist:\nJonathan Roozeman\, cello \nAnna Clyne:\nWithin Her Arms \nPyotr Tchaikovsky:\nRococo Variations \nLudwig van Beethoven:\nSymphony No. 4 in B Flat\, Op. 60 \nYoung London conducting talent Kerem Hasan meets Jonathan Roozeman\, the Finnish cellist rising comet-like on the international firmament in one of the best-known works by Tchaikovsky\, the Rococo Variations. Flanking this virtuoso masterpiece with its Mozartian ambience are two very different works representing two eras. Within Her Arms\, a heartrendingly beautiful elegy dedicated by Anna Clyne to the memory of her mother\, was composed as a commission for Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By the time he wrote his fourth symphony\, Beethoven was well on the way to embracing the ideals of the Romantic era\, but still took a little side-step into playful Classicism.

SUMMARY:PAAVALI JUMPPANEN & MOZART
DESCRIPTION:Leader and soloist:\nPaavali Jumppanen\, piano \nW. A. Mozart:\nConcerto for Piano and Orchestra in D\, KV 382\nPiano Concerto No. 23 in A\, KV 488\nSerenade No. 6 in D\, KV 239\, “Serenata notturna”\nPiano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor\, KV 491 \nPaavali Jumppanen\, a pianist who has explored the depths of Viennese Classicism in his concerts and writings\, has curated a magnificent Mozart programme round two of that maestro’s great piano concertos. Jumppanen has\, in the course of a career that has included a visiting fellowship at the Music Department of Harvard University\, become thoroughly familiar with the many aspects of his genre\, and we now have a chance to hear the fruits of his profound expertise. The Rondo composed as the new finale of the fifth piano concerto (1782) soon became one of Mozart’s most popular works. He composed 12 of his 27 piano concertos\, including Nos 23 and 24\, at breathtaking speed in 1784–1786. The two on tonight’s programme are eloquent examples of the maturity and poetry of his late works.
