SUMMARY:STAGE SPECTACULAR
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we join forces with conductor-tenor Topi Lehtipuu\, the Somnium vocal ensemble and three soloists for a spectacular evening of drama and dance. Representing ballet is Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète\, a work of classical themes\, characters and dances. Our operatic gems are plucked from works by Rameau\, an orchestral genius cleverly drawing on different operatic genres\, and the always-colourful Stravinsky. The Little Suite by Claude Debussy in turn looks to dance\, creating relaxed and beautiful moods. \nConductor: Topi Lehtipuu \nSoloists: \nElisabet Petsalo\, alto \nAnders J. Dahlin\, tenor \nYannis François\, bass \nSomnium Ensemble \nIgor Stravinsky: Apollon Musagète \nJean-Philippe Rameau: Extracts from the operas Platée\, Les Fêtes d’Hébé\, Dardanus & Les Indes Galantes \nClaude Debussy: Petite Suite \nIgor Stravinsky: Extracts from the opera The Rake’s Progress

SUMMARY:SAMULI EDELMANN: VAIHEET
DESCRIPTION:In 1997\, Samuli Edelmann released an album called Vaiheet that soon achieved cult status. It featured settings by his father\, Toni Edelmann\, of texts by Goethe\, Hesse\, Shakespeare and others. The album was a major recording project with a symphony orchestra in Paris\, but Edelmann has never before performed it in full with an orchestra in Finland. The individual songs have\, however\, acquired a prominent role in his repertoire. Following the death of his father\, Samuli released a second album\, Vaiheet 2\, of his father’s compositions. And here at last we are honoured to present the best-loved items from the Vaiheet albums with a big orchestra. \n  \nSamuli Edelmann\, vocals \nJukka Perko\, saxophone \nLeri Leskinen\, keyboards & electronics \nMatti Paatelma\, piano \nIlkka Herkman\, mixing

SUMMARY:A PASSION FOR MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:Artists now shooting to fame hold us spellbound in the first symphony concert of the spring season. As our guest we welcome Taiwan-born Tung-Chieh Chuang\, a conductor whose talent has been demonstrated in a number of competitions and worldwide fixtures. Coupled with the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto\, a regular audience favourite\, are a new work\, Swerve\, by Osmo Tapio Räihälä\, and the second Symphony by Kurt Weill bearing echoes of the political upheaval in 1930s Europe. \n  \nConductor: Tung-Chieh Chuang \nSoloist: Jiyoon Lee\, violin \n  \nOsmo Tapio Räihälä: Swerve (fp) \nFelix Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E Minor\, Op. 64 \nKurt Weill: Symphony No. 2

\nConductor: Tung-Chieh Chuang \nSoloist: Jiyoon Lee\, violin \n  \nOsmo Tapio Räihälä: Swerve (fp) \nFelix Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E Minor\, Op. 64 \nKurt Weill: Symphony No. 2

SUMMARY:FINLAND 105
DESCRIPTION:In honour of Independence Day\, we present a programme of music by great Finnish composers under the baton of Janne Nisonen. The soloist is charismatic Elina Vähälä\, a violinist whose brilliant playing has enchanted audiences the world over. The first Violin Concerto by Magnus Lindberg\, one of the best-known Finnish composers in the world today\, was premiered in New York in 2006 and was excellently received by audiences and critics alike. Finland’s Minna Leinonen\, short-listed for this year’s Teosto Prize\, set about composing a piece called Kaarne because of the image created by the word. It alludes\, she says\, both to the cry of a crow and to woody sounds\, for the string instruments that constitute the nucleus of the work are made of wood. Symphony no. 3 by Jean Sibelius rounds off the concert in stirring\, pastoral mood. \nConductor:\nJanne Nisonen \nSoloist:\nElina Vähälä\, violin \nProgramme:\nMinna Leinonen: Kaarne\nMagnus Lindberg: Violin Concerto no. 1\nJean Sibelius: Symphony no. 3

SUMMARY:FINALS CONCERT OF THE IV UUNO KLAMI COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS
DESCRIPTION:How does the music of tomorrow’s composers sound? Come and find out at the finals concerts of a competition for young composers that has this year attracted more entries than ever before. Since the prizes are awarded on the basis of not only the scores but also their live performance\, the tension will be electric right up to the very end! The finals concerts will be conducted by Atso Almila\, who is also a composer and a member of the Jury\, and members of the Kymi Sinfonietta will also form smaller chamber ensembles. In the words of Almila\, the competition is a unique opportunity for composers of the rising generation to express themselves in an exceptionally fine way. It is also a chance for our Kymi Sinfonietta players to demonstrate their diverse skills in a competition broadcast by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle). \nConductor:\nAtso Almila \nSoloists:\nVladimir Belov\, percussion player; Sonja Fräki\, piano; Piia Virtanen\, violin; Sergei Tiutiunik\, violin \nProgramme:\nPremieres of ten of the competition’s finals works & prize-giving ceremony \nJury:\nAtso Almila\, Markus Fagerudd\, Minna Leinonen\, Riikka Talvitie & Sauli Zinovjev \nFinals compositions: \n10-14-year-olds: \nSamuel Ahonen (12\, Tampere): Saame\nNiilo Halminen (14\, Kangasala): Harmonies for string orchestra and solo violin\nSiiri Koivula (11\, Helsinki): Koralliriutta\nVilho Perttilä (14\, Järvenpää): Pikkuinen päräytys päivän päätteeksi\nJustiina Syrjänen (10\, Hamina): Consertino B minor n.o. 2\, movement 1: Hetki \n15-19-year-olds: \nSointu Aalto (17\, Edmonton\, Canada): Trapdoors\, Elliptical Paths that Guide us Inward\, Love\, Observations in Population Dynamics\, and the Semiotics of the Sky\nAlex Halme (19\, Espoo): Vivace for piano and string orchestra\nSofia Kiviniemi (18\, Helsinki): from -21 to +35\nGabriel Kivivuori Sereno (18\, Joensuu): La pájara\nJino Pieviläinen (16\, Kajaani): Poéme tragique op. 14 \n

SUMMARY:PANGEA – MUSIC & LIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Spanish multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker Abraham Cupeiro captured our audiences’ hearts the very first time he visited us in 2020. Tonight we hear the new project by the brilliant instrument maker in a magical\, breath-taking blend of light and music. ‘Pangea’ alludes to a time about 200 million years ago when the present continents were still all joined together. Continents and cultures unite in this concert through music and light in a way that is both inspiring and entertaining. The conductor is one of the Kymi Sinfonietta’s own musicians\, Dimas Ruiz Santos. He and Cupeiro have recorded the music with a top London orchestra\, the Royal Philharmonic. Our concerts are part of the programme for the “Waves! Kotka Light and Sound Art” festival. \nConductor:\nDimas Ruiz Santos \nSoloist:\nAbraham Cupeiro \nProgramme:\nPangea \n
