SUMMARY:FINALS CONCERT OF THE IV UUNO KLAMI COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS
DESCRIPTION:How does the music of tomorrow’s composers sound? Come and find out at the finals concerts of a competition for young composers that has this year attracted more entries than ever before. Since the prizes are awarded on the basis of not only the scores but also their live performance\, the tension will be electric right up to the very end! The finals concerts will be conducted by Atso Almila\, who is also a composer and a member of the Jury\, and members of the Kymi Sinfonietta will also form smaller chamber ensembles. In the words of Almila\, the competition is a unique opportunity for composers of the rising generation to express themselves in an exceptionally fine way. It is also a chance for our Kymi Sinfonietta players to demonstrate their diverse skills in a competition broadcast by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle). \nConductor:\nAtso Almila \nSoloists:\nVladimir Belov\, percussion player; Sonja Fräki\, piano; Piia Virtanen\, violin; Sergei Tiutiunik\, violin \nProgramme:\nPremieres of ten of the competition’s finals works & prize-giving ceremony \nJury:\nAtso Almila\, Markus Fagerudd\, Minna Leinonen\, Riikka Talvitie & Sauli Zinovjev \nFinals compositions: \n10-14-year-olds: \nSamuel Ahonen (12\, Tampere): Saame\nNiilo Halminen (14\, Kangasala): Harmonies for string orchestra and solo violin\nSiiri Koivula (11\, Helsinki): Koralliriutta\nVilho Perttilä (14\, Järvenpää): Pikkuinen päräytys päivän päätteeksi\nJustiina Syrjänen (10\, Hamina): Consertino B minor n.o. 2\, movement 1: Hetki \n15-19-year-olds: \nSointu Aalto (17\, Edmonton\, Canada): Trapdoors\, Elliptical Paths that Guide us Inward\, Love\, Observations in Population Dynamics\, and the Semiotics of the Sky\nAlex Halme (19\, Espoo): Vivace for piano and string orchestra\nSofia Kiviniemi (18\, Helsinki): from -21 to +35\nGabriel Kivivuori Sereno (18\, Joensuu): La pájara\nJino Pieviläinen (16\, Kajaani): Poéme tragique op. 14 \n

SUMMARY:PANGEA – MUSIC & LIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Spanish multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker Abraham Cupeiro captured our audiences’ hearts the very first time he visited us in 2020. Tonight we hear the new project by the brilliant instrument maker in a magical\, breath-taking blend of light and music. ‘Pangea’ alludes to a time about 200 million years ago when the present continents were still all joined together. Continents and cultures unite in this concert through music and light in a way that is both inspiring and entertaining. The conductor is one of the Kymi Sinfonietta’s own musicians\, Dimas Ruiz Santos. He and Cupeiro have recorded the music with a top London orchestra\, the Royal Philharmonic. Our concerts are part of the programme for the “Waves! Kotka Light and Sound Art” festival. \nConductor:\nDimas Ruiz Santos \nSoloist:\nAbraham Cupeiro \nProgramme:\nPangea \n

Hanna Pakarinen\, who represented Finland in 2007\, and Mikael Saari\, who twice excelled himself in the Finnish heats\, lead us through Finland’s Eurovision Song Contest history from Laila Kinnunen (1961) to Blind Channel (2021). SUMMARY:ITALIAN REFLECTIONS
DESCRIPTION:This concert conducted by Olari Elts focuses on various reflections of a country rich in colour and variety: Italy. Andrea Portera\, winner of the 2019 International Uuno Klami Composition Competition – one of the world’s biggest composition competitions in terms of the number of participants – makes an eagerly-awaited return to our region. An Italian composer\, he has won great acclaim for his magnificent\, intense timbres\, and the new work is part of his prize. The moving folk songs of another Italian\, Luciano Berio\, combine old and new in a way that is both fresh and original. The sparkling mezzo-soprano soloist is Finnish opera singer Virpi Räisänen. And Mendelssohn abundantly captures the glorious\, disarming Italian light in his Symphony no. 4 \nConductor:\nOlari Elts \nSoloist:\nVirpi Räisänen\, mezzo-soprano \nProgramme:\nAndrea Portera: Arachnomancy\, fp\nLuciano Berio: Folk Songs\nFelix Mendelssohn: Symphony no. 4 in A major\, “Italian” \n

SUMMARY:TIMELESS CLASSICS
DESCRIPTION:This programme led by our concertmaster Raymond Cox focuses on timeless Classics that sound equally fresh from one century to the next. The Adagio & Fugue bring out the profound\, more melancholy side of Mozart and demonstrate his command of counterpoint. The soloist in his Piano Concerto no. 20\, heartrendingly beautiful and soaring into romantic heights\, ranks among Finland’s internationally most highly-acclaimed pianists of all times\, Antti Siirala. We end with one of the most magnificent souvenirs of Haydn’s years in London\, his charming “Oxford” Symphony. \nLeader:\nRaymond Cox \nSoloist:\nAntti Siirala\, piano \nProgramme:\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Adagio & Fugue in C minor KV 546\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto no. 20 in D minor KV 466\nJoseph Haydn: Symphony no. 92 in G major\, “Oxford”

SUMMARY:FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Talented young London-born Kerem Hasan tonight conducts the Kymi Sinfonietta in a fascinating interplay of darkness and light. We begin with Mozart’s compact\, exquisitely-crafted Symphony no. 35\, followed by a dusky concerto – Dark with Excessive Bright – exploring the meditative timbres of the double bass by American composer Missy Mazzoli. The second half of our concert is\, by contrast\, bathed in light. Milhaud’s carnivalesque ballet pantomime The Ox on the Roof and Kodály’s heated\, atmospheric folk dances are full of joy\, optimism and zest. \nConductor:\nKerem Hasan \nSoloist:\nJohannes Raikas\, double bass \nProgramme:\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony no. 35 in D major\, “Haffner” KV 385\nMissy Mazzoli: Dark with Excessive Bright\,  Concerto for double bass & string orchestra\nDarius Milhaud: Le bœuf sur le toit op. 58 (The Ox on the Roof)\nZoltán Kodály: Dances of Galánta
