SUMMARY:AMONG THE LIVING – AN EVENING WITH MIKKO KUUSTONEN
DESCRIPTION:Jukka Perko\, saxophone & artistic lead\nMikko Kuustonen\, vocals\nVarre Vartiainen\, guitar \nContinuing in his role as Kymi Sinfonietta’s artistic partner\, Jukka Perko joins forces with his friend\, singer-songwriter Mikko Kuustonen\, to bring Kuustonen’s remarkable body of work to our audiences. At the same time\, Kuustonen fulfils a long-held dream of performing as a soloist with a larger orchestral ensemble. This unique evening will feature both familiar songs and new material. The longtime friends aim to create a spontaneous and unforgettable shared experience. The collaboration is also a tribute to Kuustonen’s diverse artistic journey as well as a bold step towards something new. “Fifty years have passed since I wrote my first song\, and I still experience the creation of every song as a miracle. When writing\, I am alone\, but on stage I become part of a magnificent collective and a flow that brings the songs to life.”

SUMMARY:ALSO FEATURING KYMI SINFONIETTA: SPIRIT OF THE FOREST – Guest performance at the Loviisa Sibelius Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Tomas Takolander \nUuno Klami: Overture to The Cobblers on the Heath\, Op. 26\nClaude Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\nJoel Järventausta: Naava\nJean Sibelius: Tapiola\, tone poem\, Op. 112 \nKymi Sinfonietta will perform at the Sibelius Music Festival in Loviisa for the first time this year. In keeping with the festival’s theme\, the concert draws its colours from nature\, especially from the forest. The evening opens with Uuno Klami’s spirited overture to The Cobblers on the Heath\, bursting with humour and vitality. Naava\, portraying the mystery of the forest\, offers a fascinating glimpse into the work of Joel Järventausta\, a rising composer gaining international recognition. For this concert\, Tomas Takolander has arranged Sibelius’s Tapiola\, with its powerful evocation of Finnish mysticism and nature\, as well as Debussy’s beautifully flowing Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\, for Kymi Sinfonietta’s orchestral forces. \nTickets via the event organiser: https://www.loviisansibeliuspaivat.fi

SUMMARY:TRIBUTES
DESCRIPTION:Director and viola soloist: Atte Kilpeläinen \nJohann Sebastian Bach: The Art of Fugue\, BWV 1080: Contrapunctus I\, Contrapunctus IV and Contrapunctus XIII (Rectus and Inversus)\nGyörgy Kurtág: Signs\, Games and Messages: Hommage à J.S.B.\, Ligatura Y and Perpetuum Mobile\nJohannes Brahms: Cello Sonata in E minor\, Op. 38\, arranged (Heribert Breuer) for viola\, wind quintet and double bass\nLouise Farrenc: Nonet in E-flat major\, Op. 38 \nLed by violist Atte Kilpeläinen\, this chamber music evening is built around the idea of tribute\, bringing together masters from different eras in a carefully crafted musical dialogue.\nThe concert particularly celebrates Hungarian composer György Kurtág\, who recently turned 100 and whose music has created uniquely personal sonic worlds. Selected movements from Bach’s The Art of Fugue intertwine naturally with excerpts from Kurtág’s Signs\, Games and Messages\, including one piece dedicated to Bach himself. Brahms’s profound cello sonata is heard here in a rare arrangement: the combination of viola\, wind quintet and double bass reveals entirely new dimensions within the work. The concert concludes with Louise Farrenc’s energetic nonet.

SUMMARY:BAROQUE HITS
DESCRIPTION:Director: Raymond Cox\, violin \nJean-Philippe Rameau: Music from the operas Les Indes galantes and Les Boréades\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major\, BWV 1046\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major\, BWV 1050\nJean-Philippe Rameau: Music from the operas Naïs and Zoroastre \nFollowing the tremendous success of last spring’s Baroque concert\, the orchestra returns with a programme bringing together some of the era’s most dazzling works – true musical gems. At the heart of the evening are Bach’s celebrated Brandenburg Concertos\, represented here by the first and fifth concertos from the series. These masterpieces embody the splendour of Baroque instrumental music and rival even Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in popularity. Throughout the concert\, the concertos alternate with Rameau’s dance-infused operatic music – Baroque theatre music at its finest. This magnificent programme has been curated by Kymi Sinfonietta’s concertmaster\, Raymond Cox.

SUMMARY:LIQUID MOON
DESCRIPTION:Conductor and piano soloist: James Sherlock \nLudwig van Beethoven: Egmont Overture\, Op. 84\nArtturi Rönkä: Liquid Moon\, piano concerto (world premiere)\nFranz Schubert: Symphony No. 4 in C minor\, D 417\, “Tragic” \nThis richly layered concert draws inspiration from literature. The evening opens with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture\, based on the tragedy written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The highlight of the concert is the world premiere of Artturi Rönkä’s piano concerto Liquid Moon\, with conductor James Sherlock also appearing as soloist. The composer drew inspiration from Marcel Proust’s novel sequence In Search of Lost Time as well as William Carlos Williams’s poem Winter Trees\, which contains the phrase “liquid moon”. The concert concludes with Schubert’s Fourth Symphony\, known as the “Tragic” Symphony – although its hints of darkness and melancholy never fully take centre stage.
