DESCRIPTION:From Lallukka to Kujaholm – Works for string orchestra and piano\, and piano and chamber music 1930–1957 \nConductor: Esa Heikkilä\nSoloist: Esa Ylönen\, piano \nUuno Klami was born 125 years ago this year. Esa Ylönen (piano) and the Kymi\nSinfonietta strings conducted by Esa Heikkilä mark the occasion with an illustrated talk tracing the life of the Finnish composer from the Lallukka home for artists to Kujaholm in Virolahti where he spent his summers. The recital is part of Ylönen’s doctoral degree assignment at the Sibelius Academy and the first artistic doctoral degree to address the subject of Uuno Klami. It will be accompanied by photos connected with Klami and paintings by Mikko Ranki of the sea and islands at Virolahti.

The silent animation based on a story by British children’s writer Raymond Biggs is best known for its signature tune Walking in the Air. Also on the list of Christmas ‘musts’ of listeners both young and old are the enchanting notes of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite that transport us to a nocturnal fairytale world.

Krzysztof Dobosiewicz and Kymi Sinfonietta clarinettist Csaba Rajnai first joined forces nearly 20 years ago for the premiere of Dobosiewicz’s first clarinet concerto. Today’s third concerto really does put the instrument through its paces. Huba Hollòköi also conducts Martijn Padding’s dynamic Glimpse and Gounod’s spirited\, classical first symphony.

Drama\, rhythm and melancholy merge in a breathtaking programme of arrangements for orchestra of these Piazzolla masterpieces.

SUMMARY:TUULENTEI – IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MARTTI POKELA
DESCRIPTION:Tuulentei: Soila Sariola\, vocals\nPetteri Sariola\, guitar\nJyri Sariola\, drums \nJanuary 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Finnish kantele player Martti Pokela. In honour of the centenary\, three of his descendants wish to honour their grandfather’s musical legacy by combining forces in a trio with a larger orchestral line-up. Coupled with some moving arrangements of pieces by him are some new ones of the trio’s own. Martti’s original idiom and passionate love of music have brought the three Sariolas together and inspired this tribute to the past.

SUMMARY:TUULENTEI – IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MARTTI POKELA
DESCRIPTION:Tuulentei: Soila Sariola\, vocals\nPetteri Sariola\, guitar\nJyri Sariola\, drums \nJanuary 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Finnish kantele player Martti Pokela. In honour of the centenary\, three of his descendants wish to honour their grandfather’s musical legacy by combining forces in a trio with a larger orchestral line-up. Coupled with some moving arrangements of pieces by him are some new ones of the trio’s own. Martti’s original idiom and passionate love of music have brought the three Sariolas together and inspired this tribute to the past.

Jascha von der Goltz has been here before\, and we now have a chance to meet his father\, too\, in Mozart’s third violin concerto – a work of pure\, dancing delight. Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin is a nod in the direction of 18th-century Baroque\, and Poulenc’s Sinfonietta is an engaging French musical gem composed as a commission for the BBC in the 1940s.

With him he brings an impressive “Yasuo” programme chosen to bring out our profound understanding of music not only of the Classical and Romantic eras but also of the captivating Japanese sound world\, complete with forest theme. With us as the soloist in Mendelssohn’s second piano concerto brimming with optimism is one of Finland’s most successful pianists\, Henri Sigfridsson\, who is also a piano professor at the acclaimed Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. DESCRIPTION:Leader & soloist: Jukka Perko\, saxophone \nCharlie Parker (1920–1955)\, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time\, was famous as a virtuoso saxophonist and a brilliant improviser. By listening to his recordings and closely emulating him\, Jukka Perko had\, even as a teenager\, already absorbed the features of his style that in 1987 brought him a place in Dizzy Gillespie’s band. We now celebrate Parker’s tremendous impact on the history of jazz with some orchestral arrangements tailored specially for him of tunes from 1940s American musicals. Parker was the first Afro-American jazz musician to record them with a larger line-up\, and he regarded these recordings as the best he ever made.
