The musical influence of Vienna stretches far and wide\, both geographically and temporarily\, for the items on today’s programme have been an inseparable element of our everyday lives and special occasions for decades and even centuries. The soloist is the celebrated French soprano Sandrine Piau\, one of the world’s finest Mozart singers\, and the Somnium Ensemble is renowned for its compelling performances of the age-old classics. This programme brings Old Vienna to life again in our concert halls!

DESCRIPTION:Leader and soloist:\nJukka Perko\, saxophone \nOur Artistic Partner Jukka Perko leads the Kymi Sinfonietta in a concert of big band standards in zippy arrangements. As the icing on the cake\, we also have a little Grieg and Tchaikovsky in the spirit of rhythm music. The five-star arrangements are by Artu Takalo\, Sampo Kasurinen\, Ville Vannemaa and Artturi Rönkä. As Perko puts it: “The concert will brilliantly highlight the Kymi Sinfonietta’s astounding ability to venture out of its safety zone into new surroundings.” A feel-good concert sure to go with a swing!

Flanking this virtuoso masterpiece with its Mozartian ambience are two very different works representing two eras. Within Her Arms\, a heartrendingly beautiful elegy dedicated by Anna Clyne to the memory of her mother\, was composed as a commission for Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By the time he wrote his fourth symphony\, Beethoven was well on the way to embracing the ideals of the Romantic era\, but still took a little side-step into playful Classicism.
