DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nAdrien Perruchon \nSoloist:\nMyungJoo Lee\, soprano  \nArnold Schönberg:\nVerklärte Nacht\, Op. 4  \nThea Musgrave:\nNight Music \nHector Berlioz:\nLes Nuits d’été\, Op. 7 \nThe poetic themes of this concert evocative of the seductive call of the world at night act as signposts for the listener. Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that unfolds before us a picture of a man and a woman soul-searching by the light of the moon. A picturesque\, nocturnal mood also pervades the mysterious Night Music composed by Thea Musgrave in 1968. The song cycle Les Nuits d’été by the Romantic master Hector Berlioz focuses on a motif from six poems by Théophile Gautier about the course of love – the delights and their renunciation. The programme has been masterminded by its conductor\, Adrien Perruchon\, and the soloist is the magnificent Korean soprano MyungJoo Lee.

VIIb2 \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nMusic from the opera Orpheus and Eurydice  \nLuigi Boccherini:\nSymphony in D Minor G 506\, “La Casa del Diavolo” \nThis concert strikes to the very heart of the Classical era. As a taster of early Classicism\, the menu offers some music from the first masterly opera of the emerging genre\, Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice\, and his delightful small-scale Symphony in A. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 is regarded as one of the best Classical works for the instrument and is more than familiar to auditioning cellists. The soloist is Oliver Erlich\, sometimes spotted in the ranks of the Kymi Sinfonietta. Boccherini\, a first-rate cellist in his day\, plays with the Don Juan theme in his fourth symphony.

It was one of the finest works he composed during his Italian period\, and tonight is a rare opportunity to hear it. The Italian influence is reflected in the musical content\, and its beauty is manifest in a more personal and intimate way than in his other great oratorio\, Messiah. This version of the Resurrection story is especially interesting in that it presents some lesser-known characters\, and it also has some cheerful\, operatic touches. Here to perform it are some brilliant soloists hand-picked by our Artistic Partner Topi Lehtipuu.
