The dance floor is open to both seasoned dancers and anyone who simply enjoys the energy of live music. Under the baton of Sauli Saarinen\, the evening moves from elegant Viennese waltzes and lively polkas to Finnish classics and the pulsing rhythm of Argentine tango. The 2017 Tango Queen Aino Niemi brings nostalgic Finnish evergreens to life with her expressive singing. During the orchestra’s well-earned breaks\, accordionists Kalle Kurvinen and Mika Huusari with their band keep the audience dancing.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a true classic and arguably the world’s best-known violin concerto cycle: four seasons\, four concertos\, full of natural forces and reflections on the cycle of life. Händel’s radiant Water Music\, rich in dance rhythms\, was a major hit in its own time\, and its magic remains undimmed. In this concert\, we hear excerpts from all three of its suites. The programme is led by our own Baroque specialist\, Raymond Cox.

 \nAt the heart of the darkest winter\, a soulful concert offers calming\, grounding tones. A moment of introspection finds musical form in Barber’s touching Adagio and Mozart’s contemplative Serenade for Winds\, subtitled Nachtmusik (Night Music). The second half nurtures hope and light with a new work by our trumpeter Visa Haarala\, Tomukai\, a Brazilian-infused ballad\, and Dvořák’s Serenade for String Orchestra. The concert is conducted by rising conducting talent Vuokko Lahtinen.
