OPENING CONCERT OF THE AUTUMN SEASON "Zarzuela!"
We begin our exciting autumn season with a peep into the musical tradition of Spain, the popular Spanish music theatre known as Zarzuela – a genre that encompasses romances delivered in operatic style along with folk dances and clowning. Zarzuela is the musical drama of day-to-day events, opera of everyday life. Tonight’s programme presents some typical romantic Zarzuela and introduces the typical female characters that people it. The audience can also enjoy music customarily performed in very different environments; the concert could well be described as a series of colourful postcards from Spain. “Johanna Isokoski represents the classical soprano tradition with a supple, lyrical voice that lends itself both to mighty, artful arias and the more restrained glow of Lied,” wrote the Keskisuomalainen newspaper. Johanna Isokoski’s soprano has been described as crystal-clear, effervescent and exceptionally beautiful. She has also been praised for her radiant stage presence and her ability to adapt to both sensitive and comic roles. The conductor and architect of tonight’s programme is Dimas Ruiz Santos, principal oboe in the Kymi Sinfonietta, choir leader and orchestral conductor.
