SUMMARY:BAROQUE HITS
DESCRIPTION:Director: Raymond Cox\, violin \nJean-Philippe Rameau: Music from the operas Les Indes galantes and Les Boréades\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major\, BWV 1046\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major\, BWV 1050\nJean-Philippe Rameau: Music from the operas Naïs and Zoroastre \nFollowing the tremendous success of last spring’s Baroque concert\, the orchestra returns with a programme bringing together some of the era’s most dazzling works – true musical gems. At the heart of the evening are Bach’s celebrated Brandenburg Concertos\, represented here by the first and fifth concertos from the series. These masterpieces embody the splendour of Baroque instrumental music and rival even Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in popularity. Throughout the concert\, the concertos alternate with Rameau’s dance-infused operatic music – Baroque theatre music at its finest. This magnificent programme has been curated by Kymi Sinfonietta’s concertmaster\, Raymond Cox.

SUMMARY:TRIBUTES
DESCRIPTION:Director and viola soloist: Atte Kilpeläinen \nJohann Sebastian Bach: The Art of Fugue\, BWV 1080: Contrapunctus I\, Contrapunctus IV and Contrapunctus XIII (Rectus and Inversus)\nGyörgy Kurtág: Signs\, Games and Messages: Hommage à J.S.B.\, Ligatura Y and Perpetuum Mobile\nJohannes Brahms: Cello Sonata in E minor\, Op. 38\, arranged (Heribert Breuer) for viola\, wind quintet and double bass\nLouise Farrenc: Nonet in E-flat major\, Op. 38 \nLed by violist Atte Kilpeläinen\, this chamber music evening is built around the idea of tribute\, bringing together masters from different eras in a carefully crafted musical dialogue.\nThe concert particularly celebrates Hungarian composer György Kurtág\, who recently turned 100 and whose music has created uniquely personal sonic worlds. Selected movements from Bach’s The Art of Fugue intertwine naturally with excerpts from Kurtág’s Signs\, Games and Messages\, including one piece dedicated to Bach himself. Brahms’s profound cello sonata is heard here in a rare arrangement: the combination of viola\, wind quintet and double bass reveals entirely new dimensions within the work. The concert concludes with Louise Farrenc’s energetic nonet.

SUMMARY:AMONG THE LIVING – AN EVENING WITH MIKKO KUUSTONEN
DESCRIPTION:Jukka Perko\, saxophone & artistic lead\nMikko Kuustonen\, vocals\nVarre Vartiainen\, guitar \nContinuing in his role as Kymi Sinfonietta’s artistic partner\, Jukka Perko joins forces with his friend\, singer-songwriter Mikko Kuustonen\, to bring Kuustonen’s remarkable body of work to our audiences. At the same time\, Kuustonen fulfils a long-held dream of performing as a soloist with a larger orchestral ensemble. This unique evening will feature both familiar songs and new material. The longtime friends aim to create a spontaneous and unforgettable shared experience. The collaboration is also a tribute to Kuustonen’s diverse artistic journey as well as a bold step towards something new. “Fifty years have passed since I wrote my first song\, and I still experience the creation of every song as a miracle. When writing\, I am alone\, but on stage I become part of a magnificent collective and a flow that brings the songs to life.”

SUMMARY:KYMI SINFONIETTA WINDS – PLAN B: BARBER & BIZET
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Barber: Summer Music\, Op. 31\nGeorges Bizet: Suite from the opera Carmen (arranged for wind nonet by Andreas N. Tarkmann) \nIf an August summer day had a soundtrack\, this would be it. Barber’s Summer Music paints a landscape where time seems to stand still and the air shimmers with warmth. Bizet’s Carmen sets the atmosphere ablaze with operatic passion. Andreas N. Tarkmann’s witty arrangement for wind nonet offers a fresh perspective on a beloved classic. Sometimes Plan B turns out to be the best option!

This five-work series offers a fascinating look at different 20th-century compositional styles at a moment when composers were exploring the future directions of art music. Ives creates a philosophical dialogue between instrumental groups\, Françaix chooses humour as his stylistic tool\, Bridge voices his opposition to war through music\, Varèse focuses on playful rhythms\, and Martin brings together elements of past and present. Each composer inspires the listener in his own way and leads us into a world of intriguing musical colours.

SUMMARY:IN THE FLOW OF MELODY – CHAMBER CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:Kymi Sinfonietta string quartet: Sergei Tiutiunik\, violin – Linda Fogelsone\, violin – Margarethe Breit\, viola – Aleksandra Petrova\, cello\nDmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 4 in D major\, Op. 83\nMaurice Ravel: String Quartet in F major \nThe chamber concerts by our own musicians are created with great heart and artistic ambition\, highlighting the personal interests of our players. For this Thursday evening\, our string ensemble offers two magnificent string quartets\, both moving in deeply emotional waters while cherishing melodic beauty. Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 4 is a profoundly personal work that reflects the contradictions of its\nera and one of which the composer himself was very proud. Ravel’s String Quartet became his first major success\, and audiences also received it with enthusiasm – it is a masterful combination of impressionistic tones and elegant musical storytelling.

The deeply moving power and beauty of Sibelius’s musical language reflecting Finnish nature and spirit is crystallised in the most recorded violin concerto of the 20th century.\nIt raises the soloist’s role to extraordinary heights of technical virtuosity and profound expression. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3\, radiating a clarity reminiscent of the Viennese classics\, and the expressive overture by Louise Farrenc – a driving force in 19th- century Parisian musical life – are interpreted under the direction of the versatile Jukka Untamala.

The emotion itself is also examined in an academic spirit under the guidance of Professor Mikko Sams\, a specialist in cognitive neuroscience\, who creates a cosy\, homespun atmosphere from the psychologist’s chair as he talks to the audience about happiness. As our audience knows\, Helena\nJuntunen is one of Finland’s most versatile opera singers\, with impressive acting skills and a natural gift for comedy. Jukka Harju\, a leading name in Finnish French horn circles\, admirably demonstrates the brilliance and singing quality of the instrument in the spirited second horn concerto composed by Richard Strauss late in life.
