SUMMARY:THE FOUR SEASONS
DESCRIPTION:Leader and soloist: Raymond Cox\, violin\nAntonio Vivaldi: The Four Seasons\, Op. 8 Georg Friedrich Händel: Water Music\, excerpts from the three suites\, HWV 348–350 \nA long-standing wish from our listeners comes true in this concert\, which brings together two of the most beloved and frequently performed Baroque works – The Four Seasons and Water Music. Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a true classic and arguably the world’s best-known violin concerto cycle: four seasons\, four concertos\, full of natural forces and reflections on the cycle of life. Händel’s radiant Water Music\, rich in dance rhythms\, was a major hit in its own time\, and its magic remains undimmed. In this concert\, we hear excerpts from all three of its suites. The programme is led by our own Baroque specialist\, Raymond Cox.

SUMMARY:AT HOME IN MUSIC – THE CLARINET PERSPECTIVE
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Huba Hollòköi\nSoloist: Csaba Rajnai\, clarinet \nMartijn Padding: Glimpse\nKrzysztof Dobosiewicz: Clarinet concerto no. 3 (Significations profondes de l’absurdité\, fp)\nCharles Gounod: Symphony no. 1 in D \nThe artists in this concert both have roots in Central Europe\, which also provides the substance for the programme. Krzysztof Dobosiewicz and Kymi Sinfonietta clarinettist Csaba Rajnai first joined forces nearly 20 years ago for the premiere of Dobosiewicz’s first clarinet concerto. Today’s third concerto really does put the instrument through its paces. Huba Hollòköi also conducts Martijn Padding’s dynamic Glimpse and Gounod’s spirited\, classical first symphony.

The concert is a fascinating survey of the rich tapestry of Estonian music of the 20th and 21st centuries. It also presents some leading Estonian composers who have made a lasting mark both in their homeland and on the international scene – such as Arvo Pärt\, who recently turned 90\, Erkki-Sven Tüür\, Heino Eller and Lepo Sumera – and represents a magnificent meeting of the diverse skills of Estonian and Finnish musicians. \nIn partnership with the City of Kotka

SUMMARY:BRASSTIME
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Tuomas Pirilä\nSoloist: Jukka Harju\, horn\nGiuseppe Verdi: Overture to ‘Aida’ (Kouvola)\nGioachino Rossini: Overture to ‘The Barber of Seville’\nRichard Strauss: Horn concerto no. 2 in E flat\nLudwig van Beethoven: Symphony no. 7 \nBrass take the limelight in this cheerful\, foot-tapping concert of items ranging from operatic tunes to symphonic elation that is part of the Kymi Brass event in Kouvola. Jukka Harju\, a leading name in Finnish French horn circles\, admirably demonstrates the brilliance and singing quality of the instrument in the spirited second horn concerto composed by Richard Strauss late in life. Nor is there any lack of energy flow in the closing work on the programme\, Beethoven’s seventh symphony\, each movement of which is a feast of life and light.

SUMMARY:“LOUD SILENCES” – COMIC AND TRAGIC SCENES FROM A COUPLE’S LIFE
DESCRIPTION:Conductor & soloist: Topi Lehtipuu\, tenor\nWoman: Matleena Kuusniemi\nScript: Anu Arasu & Topi Lehtipuu \nOur Artistic Partner Topi Lehtipuu has created a host of imaginative programmes to delight our audiences\, and tonight’s is no exception. It focuses on communication between husband and wife: tragic and comic scenes in which silence acquires many\nmanifestations. They afford us glimpses of the lives of couples of different ages\, stories based on a shared rhythm and interaction between two people. Woven into the drama are magnificent snatches of music in which the orchestra has a stage role all of its own. The script is by Topi Lehtipuu and Anu Arasu.

SUMMARY:TUULENTEI – IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MARTTI POKELA
DESCRIPTION:Tuulentei: Soila Sariola\, vocals\nPetteri Sariola\, guitar\nJyri Sariola\, drums \nJanuary 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Finnish kantele player Martti Pokela. In honour of the centenary\, three of his descendants wish to honour their grandfather’s musical legacy by combining forces in a trio with a larger orchestral line-up. Coupled with some moving arrangements of pieces by him are some new ones of the trio’s own. Martti’s original idiom and passionate love of music have brought the three Sariolas together and inspired this tribute to the past.

DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Jascha von der Goltz\nSoloist: Gottfried von der Goltz\, violin\nMaurice Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Violin concerto no. 3 in G\, KV 216\nFrancis Poulenc: Sinfonietta\, FP 141 \nWe unleash an entrancing array of rich\, colourful French music in this concert by two\nmembers of a German family of musicians. Jascha von der Goltz has been here before\, and we now have a chance to meet his father\, too\, in Mozart’s third violin concerto – a work of pure\, dancing delight. Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin is a nod in the direction of 18th-century Baroque\, and Poulenc’s Sinfonietta is an engaging French musical gem composed as a commission for the BBC in the 1940s.

SUMMARY:OPENING CONCERT: JUKKA PERKO PLAYS CHARLIE PARKER
DESCRIPTION:Leader & soloist: Jukka Perko\, saxophone \nCharlie Parker (1920–1955)\, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time\, was famous as a virtuoso saxophonist and a brilliant improviser. By listening to his recordings and closely emulating him\, Jukka Perko had\, even as a teenager\, already absorbed the features of his style that in 1987 brought him a place in Dizzy Gillespie’s band. We now celebrate Parker’s tremendous impact on the history of jazz with some orchestral arrangements tailored specially for him of tunes from 1940s American musicals. Parker was the first Afro-American jazz musician to record them with a larger line-up\, and he regarded these recordings as the best he ever made.
