SUMMARY:FIGURES OF EIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Franz Schubert: Octet in F\, D. 803 \nHanna Hujanen\, clarinet\nSamuel Rouleau\, bassoon\nJanne Laine\, French horn\nRaymond Cox\, violin\nPiia Virtanen\, violin\nSameli Vettenranta\, viola\nKati Ylitalo\, cello\nGregory Staas\, double bass \nA truly tonic performance by eight of our very own players in a work lasting about an hour guaranteed to lighten up the dark winter evening. Schubert wrote his six-movement Octet at the request of the virtuoso clarinetist Ferdinand Troyer and it was premiered in Vienna in 1824. It has been likened to Beethoven’s Septet\, a hit in its day\, and Schubert certainly succeeded equally well – if not better\, some say – in his Octet. Its melodies and playful virtuosity do indeed hold the listener in their grip.

SUMMARY:SOUND THE TRUMPET
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nJózsef Hárs \nSoloist:\nGábor Tarkövi\, trumpet \nLotta Wennäkoski: Verdigris\nJoseph Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E flat\, Hob. VIIe:1\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Serenade no. 9 in D\, KV 320\, “Posthorn” \nThis concert spotlights moments in history up to the present day. As our guests we welcome two brilliant Hungarian-born musicians: József Hárs\, now living in Finland\, and Gabor Tarkövi\, principal trumpet in the Berlin Philharmonic and soloist of world renown. Haydn’s virtuosic trumpet concerto was a chance for the composer to explore the potential of the then only recently modernised trumpet. Echoes of the past may also be detected in Lotta Wennäkoski’s Verdigris drawing on elements of Sibelius’s tone poem En Saga and Mozart’s graceful Posthorn Serenade – a flashback to how the post was delivered in the early 18th century.

DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nTopi Lehtipuu \nSoloist:\nHelena Juntunen\, soprano \nActress:\nAnna Paavilainen (as Nell Theobald) \nTopi Lehtipuu and soprano Helena Juntunen have devised a dramatic programme especially for our audiences. Based on a true story\, it consists of a dialogue between the renowned Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson and her obsessive stalker Nell Theobald. The relationship between this “stalker” – a model and actress – acquired some very strange and even theatrical aspects. The concert platform becomes a theatre stage on which the actress and the soprano provide glimpses into their lives in an atmosphere created by music by Wagner\, Strauss\, Sibelius and Rangström.

SUMMARY:VENEZIANA!
DESCRIPTION:Leader & soloist:\nJukka Perko\, saxophone \nSoloist:\nIiro Rantala\, piano \nOur Artistic Partner Jukka Perko and composer-pianist Iiro Rantala invite us to join them in the Venice of days gone by. Rantala’s new production Veneziana takes a humorous look at great names in and the cultural history of the famous Italian city. We visit Claudio Monteverdi as he pores over the score of an opera. Across the city\, Antonio Vivaldi sits composing his Four Seasons and wondering what that mysterious distant land of Finland might be like in winter. By contrast\, Giacomo Casanova the writer and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte roam the narrow streets in search of company. Veneziana also focuses on the last moments of Richard Wagner\, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Diaghilev in the magical city. Veneziana has been recorded with players from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

As an opening taster it begins with the overture to Armida\, an opera by Salieri reflecting the new spirit of the times and heralding his role as one of the most celebrated opera composers of his day. Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante reveals the varied talents of the orchestra’s own players in an airy\, lively work greatly admired ever since its premiere and allowing its violin\, cello\, oboe and bassoon players ample opportunities to shine. Crowning the concert is Mozart’s iconic Symphony no. 40 – a work of infinitely memorable melodies that have haunted both concert halls and the silver screen.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL CLASSICS
DESCRIPTION:Leader:\nRaymond Cox \nSoloist:\nOliver Erlich\, cello \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nSymphony in A “Regensburg” \nJoseph Haydn:\nCello Concerto No. 2 in D\, Hob. VIIb2 \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nMusic from the opera Orpheus and Eurydice \nLuigi Boccherini:\nSymphony in D Minor G 506\, “La Casa del Diavolo” \nThis concert strikes to the very heart of the Classical era. As a taster of early Classicism\, the menu offers some music from the first masterly opera of the emerging genre\, Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice\, and his delightful small-scale Symphony in A. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 is regarded as one of the best Classical works for the instrument and is more than familiar to auditioning cellists. The soloist is Oliver Erlich\, sometimes spotted in the ranks of the Kymi Sinfonietta. Boccherini\, a first-rate cellist in his day\, plays with the Don Juan theme in his fourth symphony.

SUMMARY:IN THE NIGHT’S EMBRACE
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nAdrien Perruchon \nSoloist:\nMyungJoo Lee\, soprano \nArnold Schönberg:\nVerklärte Nacht\, Op. 4 \nThea Musgrave:\nNight Music \nHector Berlioz:\nLes Nuits d’été\, Op. 7 \nThe poetic themes of this concert evocative of the seductive call of the world at night act as signposts for the listener. Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that unfolds before us a picture of a man and a woman soul-searching by the light of the moon. A picturesque\, nocturnal mood also pervades the mysterious Night Music composed by Thea Musgrave in 1968. The song cycle Les Nuits d’été by the Romantic master Hector Berlioz focuses on a motif from six poems by Théophile Gautier about the course of love – the delights and their renunciation. The programme has been masterminded by its conductor\, Adrien Perruchon\, and the soloist is the magnificent Korean soprano MyungJoo Lee.

DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nKerem Hasan \nSoloist:\nJonathan Roozeman\, cello \nAnna Clyne:\nWithin Her Arms \nPyotr Tchaikovsky:\nRococo Variations \nLudwig van Beethoven:\nSymphony No. 4 in B Flat\, Op. 60 \nYoung London conducting talent Kerem Hasan meets Jonathan Roozeman\, the Finnish cellist rising comet-like on the international firmament in one of the best-known works by Tchaikovsky\, the Rococo Variations. Flanking this virtuoso masterpiece with its Mozartian ambience are two very different works representing two eras. Within Her Arms\, a heartrendingly beautiful elegy dedicated by Anna Clyne to the memory of her mother\, was composed as a commission for Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By the time he wrote his fourth symphony\, Beethoven was well on the way to embracing the ideals of the Romantic era\, but still took a little side-step into playful Classicism.

SUMMARY:PAAVALI JUMPPANEN & MOZART
DESCRIPTION:Leader and soloist:\nPaavali Jumppanen\, piano \nW. A. Mozart:\nConcerto for Piano and Orchestra in D\, KV 382\nPiano Concerto No. 23 in A\, KV 488\nSerenade No. 6 in D\, KV 239\, “Serenata notturna”\nPiano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor\, KV 491 \nPaavali Jumppanen\, a pianist who has explored the depths of Viennese Classicism in his concerts and writings\, has curated a magnificent Mozart programme round two of that maestro’s great piano concertos. Jumppanen has\, in the course of a career that has included a visiting fellowship at the Music Department of Harvard University\, become thoroughly familiar with the many aspects of his genre\, and we now have a chance to hear the fruits of his profound expertise. The Rondo composed as the new finale of the fifth piano concerto (1782) soon became one of Mozart’s most popular works. He composed 12 of his 27 piano concertos\, including Nos 23 and 24\, at breathtaking speed in 1784–1786. The two on tonight’s programme are eloquent examples of the maturity and poetry of his late works.
