SUMMARY:CLASSICAL CLASSICS
DESCRIPTION:Leader:\nRaymond Cox \nSoloist:\nOliver Erlich\, cello \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nSymphony in A “Regensburg” \nJoseph Haydn:\nCello Concerto No. 2 in D\, Hob. VIIb2 \nChristoph Willibald Gluck:\nMusic from the opera Orpheus and Eurydice \nLuigi Boccherini:\nSymphony in D Minor G 506\, “La Casa del Diavolo” \nThis concert strikes to the very heart of the Classical era. As a taster of early Classicism\, the menu offers some music from the first masterly opera of the emerging genre\, Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice\, and his delightful small-scale Symphony in A. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 is regarded as one of the best Classical works for the instrument and is more than familiar to auditioning cellists. The soloist is Oliver Erlich\, sometimes spotted in the ranks of the Kymi Sinfonietta. Boccherini\, a first-rate cellist in his day\, plays with the Don Juan theme in his fourth symphony.

SUMMARY:IN THE NIGHT’S EMBRACE
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nAdrien Perruchon \nSoloist:\nMyungJoo Lee\, soprano \nArnold Schönberg:\nVerklärte Nacht\, Op. 4 \nThea Musgrave:\nNight Music \nHector Berlioz:\nLes Nuits d’été\, Op. 7 \nThe poetic themes of this concert evocative of the seductive call of the world at night act as signposts for the listener. Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that unfolds before us a picture of a man and a woman soul-searching by the light of the moon. A picturesque\, nocturnal mood also pervades the mysterious Night Music composed by Thea Musgrave in 1968. The song cycle Les Nuits d’été by the Romantic master Hector Berlioz focuses on a motif from six poems by Théophile Gautier about the course of love – the delights and their renunciation. The programme has been masterminded by its conductor\, Adrien Perruchon\, and the soloist is the magnificent Korean soprano MyungJoo Lee.

SUMMARY:MOVING AND MASTERLY
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nKerem Hasan \nSoloist:\nJonathan Roozeman\, cello \nAnna Clyne:\nWithin Her Arms \nPyotr Tchaikovsky:\nRococo Variations \nLudwig van Beethoven:\nSymphony No. 4 in B Flat\, Op. 60 \nYoung London conducting talent Kerem Hasan meets Jonathan Roozeman\, the Finnish cellist rising comet-like on the international firmament in one of the best-known works by Tchaikovsky\, the Rococo Variations. Flanking this virtuoso masterpiece with its Mozartian ambience are two very different works representing two eras. Within Her Arms\, a heartrendingly beautiful elegy dedicated by Anna Clyne to the memory of her mother\, was composed as a commission for Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By the time he wrote his fourth symphony\, Beethoven was well on the way to embracing the ideals of the Romantic era\, but still took a little side-step into playful Classicism.

SUMMARY:PAAVALI JUMPPANEN & MOZART
DESCRIPTION:Leader and soloist:\nPaavali Jumppanen\, piano \nW. A. Mozart:\nConcerto for Piano and Orchestra in D\, KV 382\nPiano Concerto No. 23 in A\, KV 488\nSerenade No. 6 in D\, KV 239\, “Serenata notturna”\nPiano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor\, KV 491 \nPaavali Jumppanen\, a pianist who has explored the depths of Viennese Classicism in his concerts and writings\, has curated a magnificent Mozart programme round two of that maestro’s great piano concertos. Jumppanen has\, in the course of a career that has included a visiting fellowship at the Music Department of Harvard University\, become thoroughly familiar with the many aspects of his genre\, and we now have a chance to hear the fruits of his profound expertise. The Rondo composed as the new finale of the fifth piano concerto (1782) soon became one of Mozart’s most popular works. He composed 12 of his 27 piano concertos\, including Nos 23 and 24\, at breathtaking speed in 1784–1786. The two on tonight’s programme are eloquent examples of the maturity and poetry of his late works.

SUMMARY:IN MEMORIAM
DESCRIPTION:Our Artistic Partner Topi Lehtipuu joins forces with the Kymi Sinfonietta\, four internationally-celebrated soloists\, the Somnium Ensemble and four great composers. Bach composed his Cantata BWV 105 in 1723\, for the ninth Sunday after Trinity. Beethoven’s masterly choral cantata Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt is based on two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Crowning the concert is Mozart’s Requiem\, a work that never fails to affect the listener and with which he was feverishly battling shortly before his death. Lehtipuu has chosen just the right soloists and the result certainly promises to be a feast of choral music. \nConductor: Topi Lehtipuu\nChoir:  Somnium Ensemble \nSoloists: \nHendrickje Van Kerckhove\, soprano\nErica Back\, alto\nOscar Esmerode\, tenor\nSzymon Raczkowski\, bass \nProgram:\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Cantata BWV 105\nLudwig van Beethoven: Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt\, op. 112\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Requiem\, KV 626

SUMMARY:SPARKLING ITALIAN OPERA
DESCRIPTION:Opera is Italy’s gift to the world\, and to guide us on our journey to its very sources is one of our two new Artistic Partners\, Topi Lehtipuu. The sparkling classics range in this concert from the early 17th-century Baroque to the 19th century in the company of masters of this impressive dramatic genre. At the heart of the programme is the overture to Monteverdi’s Orfeo\, which has gone down in history as the first great opera. \nFollowing it are some arias by the late-Baroque master Vivaldi and two 19th-century operatic ‘giants’\, Donizetti and Rossini. Bringing us up to the present day is Thierry Escaich’s Baroque Song inspired by the chorale preludes of J.S. Bach. The star soloist is mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg. \nConductor: Topi Lehtipuu\nSoloist: Ann Hallenberg\, mezzo-soprano \nProgram:\nClaudio Monteverdi: Overture to the opera ‘Orfeo’\nAntonio Vivaldi: Opera arias\nThierry Escaich: Baroque Song\nGaetano Donizetti: String quartet (Allegro)\, arr. for string orchestra\nGaetano Donizetti: Opera arias\nGioachino Rossini: Giovanna d’Arco\, cantata for mezzo-soprano and orchestra (arr. SUMMARY:CHAMBER RECITAL – RAHMANINOV 150
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Rachmaninov – a composer\, first-rate pianist and conductor who ended up emigrating from Russia to the United States. The programme for this concert curated by the leader of our second violins\, Sergei Tiutiunik\, includes three small-scale works brimming with late-Romantic longing in which the piano\, played by Irina Zahharenkova\, occupies a very special role. \nWe also dip into three life-affirming pieces by Fritz Kreisler\, who likewise emigrated to the United States\, in his case from Austria-Hungary\, and the brilliantly effervescent violin sonata no. 8 by Ludwig van Beethoven. \n  \nEnsemble: \nRaymond Cox\, violin\nSergei Tiutiunik\, violin\nSisu Sieppala\, violin\nOliver Erlich\, cello\nIrina Zahharenkova\, piano \nProgram: \nLudwig van Beethoven: Violin sonata no. 8 in G major\, op. 30/3 \nSergei Rahmaninov: \nPrelude and Oriental Dance\, op. 2 \nVocalise\, op. 34 no. 14 \nFritz Kreisler: \nSchön Rosmarin \nLiebesleid \nCaprice Viennois\, op. 2 \nSergei Rahmaninov: Trio Élégiaque no. 2 in D minor\, op. 9

SUMMARY:MOVIE CONCERT – CHAPLIN’S THE GOLD RUSH
DESCRIPTION:The Kymi Sinfonietta’s ultra-popular series of movie concerts continues with the evergreen Chaplin classic The Gold Rush\, with a live accompaniment to the original silent movie of 1925. Chaplin composed the score in 1942\, and it has since been arranged for live performances of the 1925 version by Timothy Brock. Based on the plot of the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska\, the film and the live music composed for it have been delighting viewers ever since. \nChaplin’s knack of combining comedy with drama simply never fails. The score provides not just background music; it captures the very essence of the characters and events. \nThe film lasts 88 minutes. \nConductor: Kimmo Tullila

SUMMARY:BACHS AND BEETHOVEN
DESCRIPTION:Works by the early Classical era feature far less often in the repertoire of the orchestral giants than those by Mozart or Haydn. Tonight is therefore a major exception\, focusing as it does on compositions by two of the great Johann Sebastian’s sons: Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann. \nThe programme also includes a Fantasia for solo piano by C.P.E.\, performed on a fortepiano. Beethoven’s third piano concerto operates in very different worlds\, though the listener may still detect echoes of the earlier Bachs. For the symphony by C.P.E. is separated from the Beethoven concerto by only a quarter of a century! \nLeader: Raymond Cox\nSoloist: Joonas Ahonen\, piano & fortepiano \nProgram:\nC.P.E. Bach: Symphony in E-flat major\, Wq. 179\nW.F. Bach: Symphony in F major\, F. 67\nC.P.E. Bach: Fantasia in C major\, Wq. 59/6\nLudwig van Beethoven: Piano concerto no. 3

SUMMARY:MOZART & VASKS
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s conductor\, Juha Kangas – “father” of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra – has reaped many accolades and distinctions in the course of an extensive and varied career both at home in Finland and abroad. The soloist in Vasks’s second Cello Concerto is Finnish virtuoso Marko Ylönen\, who has also recorded the concerto with Kangas. Its portrayal of human life well reflects Kangas’s profound understanding of Vasks’s music. \n  \nConductor: Juha Kangas \nSoloist: Marko Ylönen\, cello \n  \nW.A. SUMMARY:THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF OUR SAVIOUR ON THE CROSS
DESCRIPTION:We immerse ourselves in the reassuring\, optimistic message of Easter as we listen to Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross.
