DESCRIPTION:This programme is part of the “Waves! Light and Sound in Kotka” festival \nThe interplay of light\, water and colour floods the concert hall in this fantastic work of art to music chosen by Olari Elts and lighting effects by Niko Tiainen. The audience can look forward to a concert of astounding shades and effects on an impressive visual journey from the depths of the ocean right out into space. \nThe concert will also pay tribute to the life and work of the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (1952–2023) with an arrangement for string orchestra of her Terra Memoria dedicated to all the departed\, memories of whom live on in the moments we shared together. Deep Dark Shine by Erkki-Sven Tüür makes light shine in the depths. The Ring of Fire and Love by Outi Tarkiainen\, commissioned jointly by the Kymi Sinfonietta\, Jyväskylä Sinfonia and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra examines the volcanic belt that surrounds the Pacific Ocean\, the bright ring of sunlight around the moon at the height of a solar eclipse\, and the wonder of birth. \nJustė Janulytė’s The Colour of Water transports saxophonist Joonatan Rautiola across the waves and the water’s mirror-like reflections. The music of Adams’ Become River broadens out into a delta of melodic streams flowing toward the depths. The concert is part of the “Waves! DESCRIPTION:Opera is Italy’s gift to the world\, and to guide us on our journey to its very sources is one of our two new Artistic Partners\, Topi Lehtipuu. The sparkling classics range in this concert from the early 17th-century Baroque to the 19th century in the company of masters of this impressive dramatic genre. At the heart of the programme is the overture to Monteverdi’s Orfeo\, which has gone down in history as the first great opera. \nFollowing it are some arias by the late-Baroque master Vivaldi and two 19th-century operatic ‘giants’\, Donizetti and Rossini. Bringing us up to the present day is Thierry Escaich’s Baroque Song inspired by the chorale preludes of J.S. Bach. DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Rachmaninov – a composer\, first-rate pianist and conductor who ended up emigrating from Russia to the United States. DESCRIPTION:Works by the early Classical era feature far less often in the repertoire of the orchestral giants than those by Mozart or Haydn. Tonight is therefore a major exception\, focusing as it does on compositions by two of the great Johann Sebastian’s sons: Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann. \nThe programme also includes a Fantasia for solo piano by C.P.E.\, performed on a fortepiano. Beethoven’s third piano concerto operates in very different worlds\, though the listener may still detect echoes of the earlier Bachs. SUMMARY:COMPELLING CELLO
DESCRIPTION:The Kymi Sinfonietta welcomes German conductor Jascha von der Goltz\, who gained widespread international attention on winning the first prize in the International Panula Conducting Competition in 2021. At the heart of the concert is one of the most challenging\, intense works in all cello literature\, the first cello concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. \nThe soloist in this compelling work is Polish Maciej Kułakowski\, who rose to fame on winning the first prize and a special award in the 2015 Lutosławski Competition. The concert begins with Langsamer Satz\, a little late-Romantic masterpiece by Webern conjuring up the stark tranquillity of the Austrian mountains. DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s conductor\, Juha Kangas – “father” of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra – has reaped many accolades and distinctions in the course of an extensive and varied career both at home in Finland and abroad. With him he is bringing two works by Mozart and two by Latvian Pēteris Vasks\, a composer with whom he has long been collaborating. It was to Kangas that Vasks dedicated his Musica Serena. The soloist in Vasks’s second Cello Concerto is Finnish virtuoso Marko Ylönen\, who has also recorded the concerto with Kangas. DESCRIPTION:In 1997\, Samuli Edelmann released an album called Vaiheet that soon achieved cult status. It featured settings by his father\, Toni Edelmann\, of texts by Goethe\, Hesse\, Shakespeare and others. The album was a major recording project with a symphony orchestra in Paris\, but Edelmann has never before performed it in full with an orchestra in Finland. The individual songs have\, however\, acquired a prominent role in his repertoire. Following the death of his father\, Samuli released a second album\, Vaiheet 2\, of his father’s compositions. DESCRIPTION:In honour of Independence Day\, we present a programme of music by great Finnish composers under the baton of Janne Nisonen. The soloist is charismatic Elina Vähälä\, a violinist whose brilliant playing has enchanted audiences the world over. The first Violin Concerto by Magnus Lindberg\, one of the best-known Finnish composers in the world today\, was premiered in New York in 2006 and was excellently received by audiences and critics alike. Finland’s Minna Leinonen\, short-listed for this year’s Teosto Prize\, set about composing a piece called Kaarne because of the image created by the word. It alludes\, she says\, both to the cry of a crow and to woody sounds\, for the string instruments that constitute the nucleus of the work are made of wood. DESCRIPTION:Spanish multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker Abraham Cupeiro captured our audiences’ hearts the very first time he visited us in 2020. Tonight we hear the new project by the brilliant instrument maker in a magical\, breath-taking blend of light and music. ‘Pangea’ alludes to a time about 200 million years ago when the present continents were still all joined together. Continents and cultures unite in this concert through music and light in a way that is both inspiring and entertaining. The conductor is one of the Kymi Sinfonietta’s own musicians\, Dimas Ruiz Santos. He and Cupeiro have recorded the music with a top London orchestra\, the Royal Philharmonic. Hanna Pakarinen\, who represented Finland in 2007\, and Mikael Saari\, who twice excelled himself in the Finnish heats\, lead us through Finland’s Eurovision Song Contest history from Laila Kinnunen (1961) to Blind Channel (2021). Along the way we will recall many hits and moments indelibly etched on the nation’s collective memory.
