SUMMARY:SIBELIUS!
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: Jukka Untamala
\nSoloist: Sueye Park\, violin\nLouise Farrenc: Overture No. 1 in E minor\, Op. 23\nJean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor\, Op. 47\nJean Sibelius: Symphony No. 3 in C major\, Op. 52 \nWe are delighted to welcome Sueye Park\, winner of the 2025 Sibelius Violin Competition\, whose impressively assured sound convinced the jury. The deeply moving power and beauty of Sibelius’s musical language reflecting Finnish nature and spirit is crystallised in the most recorded violin concerto of the 20th century.\nIt raises the soloist’s role to extraordinary heights of technical virtuosity and profound expression. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3\, radiating a clarity reminiscent of the Viennese classics\, and the expressive overture by Louise Farrenc – a driving force in 19th- century Parisian musical life – are interpreted under the direction of the versatile Jukka Untamala.

SUMMARY:THE FOUR SEASONS
DESCRIPTION:Leader and soloist: Raymond Cox\, violin\nAntonio Vivaldi: The Four Seasons\, Op. 8 Georg Friedrich Händel: Water Music\, excerpts from the three suites\, HWV 348–350 \nA long-standing wish from our listeners comes true in this concert\, which brings together two of the most beloved and frequently performed Baroque works – The Four Seasons and Water Music. Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a true classic and arguably the world’s best-known violin concerto cycle: four seasons\, four concertos\, full of natural forces and reflections on the cycle of life. Händel’s radiant Water Music\, rich in dance rhythms\, was a major hit in its own time\, and its magic remains undimmed. In this concert\, we hear excerpts from all three of its suites. The programme is led by our own Baroque specialist\, Raymond Cox.

DESCRIPTION:Conductor & soloist: Topi Lehtipuu\, tenor\nWoman: Matleena Kuusniemi\nScript: Anu Arasu & Topi Lehtipuu \nOur Artistic Partner Topi Lehtipuu has created a host of imaginative programmes to delight our audiences\, and tonight’s is no exception. It focuses on communication between husband and wife: tragic and comic scenes in which silence acquires many\nmanifestations. SUMMARY:TUULENTEI – IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MARTTI POKELA
DESCRIPTION:Tuulentei: Soila Sariola\, vocals\nPetteri Sariola\, guitar\nJyri Sariola\, drums \nJanuary 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Finnish kantele player Martti Pokela. In honour of the centenary\, three of his descendants wish to honour their grandfather’s musical legacy by combining forces in a trio with a larger orchestral line-up. Coupled with some moving arrangements of pieces by him are some new ones of the trio’s own. Martti’s original idiom and passionate love of music have brought the three Sariolas together and inspired this tribute to the past.

SUMMARY:OPENING CONCERT: JUKKA PERKO PLAYS CHARLIE PARKER
DESCRIPTION:Leader & soloist: Jukka Perko\, saxophone \nCharlie Parker (1920–1955)\, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time\, was famous as a virtuoso saxophonist and a brilliant improviser. By listening to his recordings and closely emulating him\, Jukka Perko had\, even as a teenager\, already absorbed the features of his style that in 1987 brought him a place in Dizzy Gillespie’s band. We now celebrate Parker’s tremendous impact on the history of jazz with some orchestral arrangements tailored specially for him of tunes from 1940s American musicals. Parker was the first Afro-American jazz musician to record them with a larger line-up\, and he regarded these recordings as the best he ever made.

SUMMARY:THE MAGIC OF MOZART
DESCRIPTION:Conductor and presenter: Topi Lehtipuu\nSoloists: Magdalena Lucjan\, soprano\nŽiga Čopi\, tenor\nArias by Mozart \nWhy do the music and arias of Mozart continue to speak to us over 200 years since they were composed? This concert will try to answer that question with examples of some of his most moving operatic arias covering the emotional spectrum from A to Z. The soloists are two young singers well on the way to fame: Polish soprano Magdalena Lucjan\, who recently won the international NEUE STIMMEN singing competition\, and Slovenian tenor Žiga Čopi. The concert has been curated by our Artistic Partner Topi Lehtipuu\, who will also present it\, with texts both by him and Anu Arasu (UK).

SUMMARY:SOUND THE TRUMPET
DESCRIPTION:Conductor:\nJózsef Hárs \nSoloist:\nGábor Tarkövi\, trumpet \nLotta Wennäkoski: Verdigris\nJoseph Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E flat\, Hob. VIIe:1\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Serenade no. 9 in D\, KV 320\, “Posthorn” \nThis concert spotlights moments in history up to the present day. As our guests we welcome two brilliant Hungarian-born musicians: József Hárs\, now living in Finland\, and Gabor Tarkövi\, principal trumpet in the Berlin Philharmonic and soloist of world renown. Haydn’s virtuosic trumpet concerto was a chance for the composer to explore the potential of the then only recently modernised trumpet. Echoes of the past may also be detected in Lotta Wennäkoski’s Verdigris drawing on elements of Sibelius’s tone poem En Saga and Mozart’s graceful Posthorn Serenade – a flashback to how the post was delivered in the early 18th century.

Based on a true story\, it consists of a dialogue between the renowned Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson and her obsessive stalker Nell Theobald. SUMMARY:VENEZIANA!
DESCRIPTION:Leader & soloist:\nJukka Perko\, saxophone \nSoloist:\nIiro Rantala\, piano \nOur Artistic Partner Jukka Perko and composer-pianist Iiro Rantala invite us to join them in the Venice of days gone by. Rantala’s new production Veneziana takes a humorous look at great names in and the cultural history of the famous Italian city. We visit Claudio Monteverdi as he pores over the score of an opera. Across the city\, Antonio Vivaldi sits composing his Four Seasons and wondering what that mysterious distant land of Finland might be like in winter. By contrast\, Giacomo Casanova the writer and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte roam the narrow streets in search of company. Veneziana also focuses on the last moments of Richard Wagner\, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Diaghilev in the magical city.
