SUMMARY:SPARKLING ITALIAN OPERA
DESCRIPTION:Opera is Italy’s gift to the world\, and to guide us on our journey to its very sources is one of our two new Artistic Partners\, Topi Lehtipuu. The sparkling classics range in this concert from the early 17th-century Baroque to the 19th century in the company of masters of this impressive dramatic genre. At the heart of the programme is the overture to Monteverdi’s Orfeo\, which has gone down in history as the first great opera. \nFollowing it are some arias by the late-Baroque master Vivaldi and two 19th-century operatic ‘giants’\, Donizetti and Rossini. Bringing us up to the present day is Thierry Escaich’s Baroque Song inspired by the chorale preludes of J.S. Bach. The star soloist is mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg. \nConductor: Topi Lehtipuu\nSoloist: Ann Hallenberg\, mezzo-soprano \nProgram:\nClaudio Monteverdi: Overture to the opera ‘Orfeo’\nAntonio Vivaldi: Opera arias\nThierry Escaich: Baroque Song\nGaetano Donizetti: String quartet (Allegro)\, arr. for string orchestra\nGaetano Donizetti: Opera arias\nGioachino Rossini: Giovanna d’Arco\, cantata for mezzo-soprano and orchestra (arr. S. Sciarrino)

SUMMARY:MOVIE CONCERT – CHAPLIN’S THE GOLD RUSH
DESCRIPTION:The Kymi Sinfonietta’s ultra-popular series of movie concerts continues with the evergreen Chaplin classic The Gold Rush\, with a live accompaniment to the original silent movie of 1925. Chaplin composed the score in 1942\, and it has since been arranged for live performances of the 1925 version by Timothy Brock. Based on the plot of the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska\, the film and the live music composed for it have been delighting viewers ever since. \nChaplin’s knack of combining comedy with drama simply never fails. The score provides not just background music; it captures the very essence of the characters and events. \nThe film lasts 88 minutes. \nConductor: Kimmo Tullila

SUMMARY:MOZART & VASKS
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s conductor\, Juha Kangas – “father” of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra – has reaped many accolades and distinctions in the course of an extensive and varied career both at home in Finland and abroad. With him he is bringing two works by Mozart and two by Latvian Pēteris Vasks\, a composer with whom he has long been collaborating. It was to Kangas that Vasks dedicated his Musica Serena. The soloist in Vasks’s second Cello Concerto is Finnish virtuoso Marko Ylönen\, who has also recorded the concerto with Kangas. Its portrayal of human life well reflects Kangas’s profound understanding of Vasks’s music. \n  \nConductor: Juha Kangas \nSoloist: Marko Ylönen\, cello \n  \nW.A. SUMMARY:STAGE SPECTACULAR
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we join forces with conductor-tenor Topi Lehtipuu\, the Somnium vocal ensemble and three soloists for a spectacular evening of drama and dance. Representing ballet is Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète\, a work of classical themes\, characters and dances. Our operatic gems are plucked from works by Rameau\, an orchestral genius cleverly drawing on different operatic genres\, and the always-colourful Stravinsky. The Little Suite by Claude Debussy in turn looks to dance\, creating relaxed and beautiful moods. \nConductor: Topi Lehtipuu \nSoloists: \nElisabet Petsalo\, alto \nAnders J. SUMMARY:SAMULI EDELMANN: VAIHEET
DESCRIPTION:In 1997\, Samuli Edelmann released an album called Vaiheet that soon achieved cult status. It featured settings by his father\, Toni Edelmann\, of texts by Goethe\, Hesse\, Shakespeare and others. The album was a major recording project with a symphony orchestra in Paris\, but Edelmann has never before performed it in full with an orchestra in Finland. The individual songs have\, however\, acquired a prominent role in his repertoire. Following the death of his father\, Samuli released a second album\, Vaiheet 2\, of his father’s compositions. And here at last we are honoured to present the best-loved items from the Vaiheet albums with a big orchestra. \n  \nSamuli Edelmann\, vocals \nJukka Perko\, saxophone \nLeri Leskinen\, keyboards & electronics \nMatti Paatelma\, piano \nIlkka Herkman\, mixing

SUMMARY:FINLAND 105
DESCRIPTION:In honour of Independence Day\, we present a programme of music by great Finnish composers under the baton of Janne Nisonen. The soloist is charismatic Elina Vähälä\, a violinist whose brilliant playing has enchanted audiences the world over. The first Violin Concerto by Magnus Lindberg\, one of the best-known Finnish composers in the world today\, was premiered in New York in 2006 and was excellently received by audiences and critics alike. Finland’s Minna Leinonen\, short-listed for this year’s Teosto Prize\, set about composing a piece called Kaarne because of the image created by the word. It alludes\, she says\, both to the cry of a crow and to woody sounds\, for the string instruments that constitute the nucleus of the work are made of wood. Symphony no. 3 by Jean Sibelius rounds off the concert in stirring\, pastoral mood. \nConductor:\nJanne Nisonen \nSoloist:\nElina Vähälä\, violin \nProgramme:\nMinna Leinonen: Kaarne\nMagnus Lindberg: Violin Concerto no. 1\nJean Sibelius: Symphony no. 3

SUMMARY:ITALIAN REFLECTIONS
DESCRIPTION:This concert conducted by Olari Elts focuses on various reflections of a country rich in colour and variety: Italy. Andrea Portera\, winner of the 2019 International Uuno Klami Composition Competition – one of the world’s biggest composition competitions in terms of the number of participants – makes an eagerly-awaited return to our region. An Italian composer\, he has won great acclaim for his magnificent\, intense timbres\, and the new work is part of his prize. The moving folk songs of another Italian\, Luciano Berio\, combine old and new in a way that is both fresh and original. The sparkling mezzo-soprano soloist is Finnish opera singer Virpi Räisänen. And Mendelssohn abundantly captures the glorious\, disarming Italian light in his Symphony no. 4 \nConductor:\nOlari Elts \nSoloist:\nVirpi Räisänen\, mezzo-soprano \nProgramme:\nAndrea Portera: Arachnomancy\, fp\nLuciano Berio: Folk Songs\nFelix Mendelssohn: Symphony no. 4 in A major\, “Italian” \n

SUMMARY:FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Talented young London-born Kerem Hasan tonight conducts the Kymi Sinfonietta in a fascinating interplay of darkness and light. We begin with Mozart’s compact\, exquisitely-crafted Symphony no. 35\, followed by a dusky concerto – Dark with Excessive Bright – exploring the meditative timbres of the double bass by American composer Missy Mazzoli. The second half of our concert is\, by contrast\, bathed in light. Milhaud’s carnivalesque ballet pantomime The Ox on the Roof and Kodály’s heated\, atmospheric folk dances are full of joy\, optimism and zest. \nConductor:\nKerem Hasan \nSoloist:\nJohannes Raikas\, double bass \nProgramme:\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony no. 35 in D major\, “Haffner” KV 385\nMissy Mazzoli: Dark with Excessive Bright\,  Concerto for double bass & string orchestra\nDarius Milhaud: Le bœuf sur le toit op. 58 (The Ox on the Roof)\nZoltán Kodály: Dances of Galánta
