The sparkling classics range in this concert from the early 17th-century Baroque to the 19th century in the company of masters of this impressive dramatic genre. At the heart of the programme is the overture to Monteverdi\u2019s <em>Orfeo<\/em>, which has gone down in history as the first great opera.<\/p>\n<p>Following it are some arias by the late-Baroque master Vivaldi and two 19th-century operatic \u2018giants\u2019, Donizetti and Rossini. Bringing us up to the present day is Thierry Escaich\u2019s <em>Baroque Song<\/em> inspired by the chorale preludes of J.S. Bach.
