The poetic themes of this concert evocative of the seductive call of the world at night act as signposts for the listener. Sch\u00f6nberg\u2019s Verkl\u00e4rte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that unfolds before us a picture of a man and a woman soul-searching by the light of the moon. A picturesque, nocturnal mood also pervades the mysterious Night Music composed by Thea Musgrave in 1968. The song cycle Les Nuits d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 by the Romantic master Hector Berlioz focuses on a motif from six poems by Th\u00e9ophile Gautier about the course of love \u2013 the delights and their renunciation.
