PEARLS OF THE BALTIC SEA

Conductor: Nathanaël Iselin
Soloist: Annaleena Jämsä, flute

Eduard Tubin: Estonian Dance Suite: III. Setu tants
Heino Eller: Waltz-Fantasy in B minor

Andrea Tarrodi: Birds of Paradise II
Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11

Nathanaël Iselin begins his season as artistic partner of the orchestra in magnificent style with a programme celebrating Baltic Sea Day on 27 August. Curated by Iselin himself, this vibrant concert brings the rich musical heritage of the Baltic Sea region to life through dance rhythms, bird-inspired imagery and the mystique of northern nature. A connecting theme of life by the Baltic Sea runs through the programme, while Mendelssohn’s youthful First Symphony adds an extra burst of energy to the evening. Danish composer Carl Nielsen wrote his Flute Concerto a century ago, and audiences in the Kymenlaakso region now have a rare opportunity to hear this lyrical and richly coloured work performed live. The soloist is the versatile and charismatic Annaleena Jämsä.
