The poetic themes of this concert evocative of the seductive call of the world at night act as signposts for the listener. Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that unfolds before us a picture of a man and a woman soul-searching by the light of the moon. A picturesque, nocturnal mood also pervades the mysterious Night Music composed by Thea Musgrave in 1968. The song cycle Les Nuits d’été by the Romantic master Hector Berlioz focuses on a motif from six poems by Théophile Gautier about the course of love – the delights and their renunciation. The programme has been masterminded by its conductor, Adrien Perruchon, and the soloist is the magnificent Korean soprano MyungJoo Lee.
