TRIBUTES

16.09.2026 @ 18:30

Director and viola soloist: Atte Kilpeläinen

Johann Sebastian Bach: The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080: Contrapunctus I, Contrapunctus IV and Contrapunctus XIII (Rectus and Inversus)
György Kurtág: Signs, Games and Messages: Hommage à J.S.B., Ligatura Y and Perpetuum Mobile
Johannes Brahms: Cello Sonata in E minor, Op. 38, arranged (Heribert Breuer) for viola, wind quintet and double bass
Louise Farrenc: Nonet in E-flat major, Op. 38

Led by violist Atte Kilpeläinen, this chamber music evening is built around the idea of tribute, bringing together masters from different eras in a carefully crafted musical dialogue.
The concert particularly celebrates Hungarian composer György Kurtág, who recently turned 100 and whose music has created uniquely personal sonic worlds. Selected movements from Bach’s The Art of Fugue intertwine naturally with excerpts from Kurtág’s Signs, Games and Messages, including one piece dedicated to Bach himself. Brahms’s profound cello sonata is heard here in a rare arrangement: the combination of viola, wind quintet and double bass reveals entirely new dimensions within the work. The concert concludes with Louise Farrenc’s energetic nonet.
